“First Encounters: Rhythms of the Streets—An Ode to Mexico”
Octavia Greig is an English-American artist raised in London. Working across painting, photography, collage, installation and public art, she responds to place through observation, instinct and material exploration. Moving fluidly between digital and physical processes, she combines the immediacy of photography with the tactile language and feel of paint.
For six months in 2023 and 2024, Greig worked in Mexico City, developing “First Encounters: Rhythm of the Street — An Ode to Mexico”, the body of work presented in this exhibition. Approaching the city as a conscious outsider, she sought to capture rather than define. Through immersing herself in everyday life, her practice became a process of attentive engagement for a deeper understanding of time, place, culture, and tradition.
At the core of Greig’s art is a documentary impulse. Describing herself as a flâneur, guided by traditions of psychogeography, her photography is a tool for observation, while her painting offers a space for reflection. Her work balances historical documentation with subtle social commentary on contemporary life and culture.
